The Joy of Computing

by JM

Internet computing has a long history - longer than most of you would believe. It began back in the 1960’s and has two roots. One is the desire of Universities to connect up their computers and the other, more well-known is the original DARPA set up. (Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency)

The web cam was one of the first graphics uses for the internet; http://www.theregister.co.uk/2001/03/07/worlds_first_webcam_coffee_pot/ documents the demise of the coffeepot involved.

Where most people come to know the internet is at the point when the graphical interface was added and we had the birth of the World Wide Web (www) Now, after more than a decade of phenomenal growth, there are hundreds of millions of computers permanently attached to the internet and more that log in regularly.

Now there are millions who spend hours per day on the web, browsing, chatting, posting and downloading. And of course, viewing porn.

Many people don’t realise that, just as computer games were causative in the development of ever better video cards for computers, porn assisted the development of the Internet is a very real sense. Of course there were other causative factors in both areas, but the money that drove the upward surge came chiefly from the areas mentioned.

While today, there are a myriad different reasons for wanting high-speed internet access other than naked bodies getting sweaty, the gamers are still demanding the best and fastest hardware as the games they love push the limits of what is possible.

With 3D & VR (Virtual Reality) hardware coming along, games are becoming ultra real.

The Matrix anyone?
