Introduction to Forums – Forum Personalities

by JM

While forums come in many shapes and sizes on a variety of subjects, almost all forums have a few things in common. One big thing is the forum personalities who take part in the forums. You’ll often hear members call other members things like ‘flamer’, ‘troll’, ‘royalty’ or other terms.

Like in life, some personalities are good, and some aren’t so great. You mostly learn the hard way, but by paying attention to the labels given, you can avoid some trouble.

Here are a few of the personalities you might encounter:

*Trolls – ‘Troll’ is probably the label you will hear the most. The troll is the user who wants to get a response out of people. Usually, this response is anger and/or annoyance. When people respond as the troll wants, the troll just gets stronger. They are usually more annoying than harmful, though.

*Flamers – Flaming is basically abuse. Calling people names, ridiculing their ideas, basically indulging in behavior that, were the two people in the same room, would bring on violence against the flamer.

*The Admin – The Admin started the forum you are currently enjoying and never forgets it. Like any person in power, you can get a range of admins. From evil dictator to disengaged and disinterested, it’s good to walk softly around your admin because what they have given, they can easily take away…

*Forum Royalty/Royals – These are the forum members who have been there ‘through the ages’ and many won’t hesitate to let you know that fact. They usually consider themselves ‘above’ the petty conversation and squabbles of the newer members but can sometimes be spotted interfering/mediating if they thing the situation calls for it.

Many more (fun) forum personality descriptions can be found at the Flame Warriors Home. Check them out, have a laugh and then have another laugh when you recognize them on your favourite forums.
