Internetless
How big a part does Internet play in your life? Or the lives of your family?
This weekend was Easter (‘duh’ for obvious) and Mr JM and I went away into the country. We had some friends to visit but mostly it was to have a break, see some new country, (something we both like) and to show me some more of my adopted land.
Australia is quite a place, although I have yet to see much more than a part of Victoria, Canberra and a section of the New South Wales South coast. The animals, landscapes and light seem very different to those to which I was accustomed.
We went to The Grampians National Park, about 250 kilometres west of Melbourne. The Grampians are a mountain range (as Australian mountains go) that jut out of surrounding plains in a jagged North-South orientation. They are probably the least ‘smoothed’ hills I’ve seen here, with jagged peaks and jutting spurs that are rather awesome, particularly close up.
For the four days from Friday morning through to late Monday afternoon we were computer-less, which meant no internet. Mr JM took along his work laptop in case there were calls from his clients but realistically, way out in the country where we were, there mostly wasn’t even mobile phone service (what they call cell phones here) so I don’t know what he thought he would do for them.
But it got me thinking. How did we feel being without the daily contact of those we know on the Internet?
Mostly I think he and I were busy enough and seeing enough new sites (and he was driving – we did over 1200 kilometres) that it didn’t really matter… until we got home. Then both of us felt the need to get back in touch with the world.
So, how does the Internet influence your life? Have you had occasions when it simply hasn’t been available and if so, how did the absence affect you?
