Adventures in the Amazon…

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Well, sort of. More like, “turning records into CDs!”
One day my husband and I were quite perplexed as to how to turn his collection of over 2,000 vinyl records (including 45s and LPs) into CDs that we could actually use. Sure, you could buy a new CD to replace it, but why? Also, some are not available on CD they are so rare.

So, after fooling with cables, turntables that didn’t work and software that didn’t budge, we turned to our friends in the Amazon.

I remember seeing a turntable with a built-in CD burner. So, we clicked this link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000G835DA?tag=yourcompute02-20&camp

We typed in TEAC GF-350 turntable/CD recorder. We also search for others, but after reading reviews decided to go with this one.

Using your computer to do searches like this on the web and the amazon link shown can save you hundreds of dollars, not to mention a lot of gas and wear & tear on your car.

So, keep this link handy next time you decide to “let your fingers do the surfing!”

What’s in a FWD??

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Forwarded emails are those strange FWD: creatures you see in the subject line of your emails. They may contain cards, stories, slide shows, appeals, music and/or photos. They could also be slated as our modern day equivalent to those old chain letters you used to receive via snail-mail.

For some of your online pals, hitting FWD gives them power they do not have in real life. For others, that’s just what they do. While others give it no thought at all or think it is impolite not to respond and send on emails. Others want to show you how many people they know. This link demonstrates the proper how and why:

http://email.about.com/od/howtoforwardemails/How_to_Forward_Emails.htm

Awhile ago I tried to help some of my elderly clients settle their email frustrations.
They asked what they should forward. And, while it was just my opinion, I advised them to only send a select few. There is nothing wrong with hitting the delete key, in my opinion, if you get unwanted emails. They were also offended by the mixed content of many of these emails. I urge you to give yourself the permission to check that delete box and get them out of your inbox and your head!

Practice considerate computing and do not flood your cyber pals’ inbox with a massive amount of videos/photos, or emails. Remember, they might have a different Internet connection than you do and it will bog down their computer.
Check out this site for a fun, comprehensive look at inbox woes:

On the plus side, you could argue that forwards allow you to say things you could never really bring yourself to say in real life. I have had this experience with the more heart-felt, friendship, prayers and poetic styles of emails. These emails have given me as well as others a chance to express ourselves without having to utter a word. And, let’s face it, most forwards are cute with animation and express thoughts better than we can!

Other computer users have said they wish their friends would just write a personal hello as they have never received one. I recommended they drop them an email first to see if they reply. Keep in mind that we computer users are all at different levels.

Some users do not type well, some may only know how to forward, some despise writing - not everyone is a writer, and some would rather call you. It’s safe to assume they all mean well and want you to know they thought of you that particular day.

A computer client & I laughed about the time he forwarded an email, didn’t read it through and it send recipients a love message. Shock! They were getting replies from people they hardly knew saying “I love you, too”. This was funny, but just be careful. The item you forward may not be so harmless!

So when should you forward?

e-cards are acceptable, just don’t overdo them.
Your calendar, information about a meeting, group, etc is perfectly acceptable and at the office you may be required to do this.
Ask for prayers or assistance; notify others of a change in your life.
To announce an engagement, wedding, new baby/baptism, ceremonies, graduations, military, websites, parties, meetings, celebrations, blogs or a business. Even point others to your photos online.

When receiving an email address from anyone, inquire if they read forwards or wish to receive them. Take note of the ones who do not. If recipients do not like you to write frequently or more than a paragraph at a time, per say, respect their wishes and “delete.”

Don’t forget to set your clocks?

Sunday, March 11th, 2007

Well, it’s that wonderful time of year again, or is it? Those of you affected by the time change courtesy of the US Gov’t.

For those who are still in limbo, confused, or having problems otherwise, Microsoft has published this page just for you!

http://support.microsoft.com/dst2007

We’ll see in three weeks how this all holds up. In the mean time, if you’re living in a state/city that changes time, make sure you “Spring Forward” 1 hour if you haven’t already on 3-11-07.

Happy Spring everyone, a little early!

Never loose bookmarks AGAIN!

Friday, March 9th, 2007

Well, almost never. It’s true, you can back up your Internet Explorer favorites before you switch computers, or heaven forbid, it crashes on you but there is an easier way. A relatively new player, Mozilla Firefox, has come out with an add-on built right into their browser to solve this issue, hopefully for good!

First of all what’s Mozilla, you ask? Go to for information and a complete rundown on what you need to know.

The name of this little-known wonder is an add-on .
I’ll walk you through it. First of all, if you haven’t already, download and install Mozilla Firefox browser. (Similar to Internet Explorer - “the blue e” only better in most cases). Now don’t get upset, you can still use Internet Explorer, AOL, Netscape or anything else, just make sure you save your bookmarks in Firefox. That is, if you want to actually keep the bookmarks and not start from scratch.

After you’ve downloaded, click tools (on the top menu directly above your screen) then look for Foxmarks bookmarks synchronizer, click to download it. Then close out of your browser and restart.

This is excellent if you have more than 1 computer at home or work that you use on a regular basis.

Upon your first use, go to bookmarks, select foxmarks and set up an account with a username and a password

Click synchronize now button at bottom of box, then you are set. I would check the first 2 boxes that make automatically synchronizing your bookmarks a snap! You won’t even have to give it a second thought. I’d also be on the cautious side and sign out if you are on computers you share with others.

Do you have questions? Tell us what you’ve found works for you saving those bookmarks.

Good luck!

It’s the weekend, come kick back…

Please, nothing to technical, I don’t want to have to think that hard on the days I am not working!

If you need to see a technician, I’ll let you know that, as well.
